Every once in a while, you run across a truly amazing piece of artwork. Sometimes it might be an oil painting, sometimes a work of sculpture. Sometimes, a piece of maki-e.

The pen illustrated in this article is produced By Classic Pens on the Montblanc 149 pen. Long known as being a flagship among modern fountain pens, the Montblanc 149 is an instantly recognizable icon in the world of fine writing instruments.

For the last few years, Classic Pens has begun focusing on the production of high end maki-e writing instruments. They've produced several unique designs, this is just one example of the results of their hard work. Beginning with a theme, Honeybees and their hive, the work was passed to Maki-e artists in Japan.

This artists, Shogetsu, is (as you can see) extremely talented. Using a very high relief maki-e technique the artist portrays the bees in three dimensions, while the honeycomb is detailed on both cap and barrel using traditional maki-e methods. This combination of both flat and high relief techniques makes for a very complicated design, and one that is doubly difficult for the artist to complete.

This labor is finished off with the artist's red seal signature and is numbered as 00/15. The current owner collects one of a kind and prototype pens, and was kind enough to allow us the opportunity to photograph this pen.
