Pelikan's new Limited Edition is quite a departure from their past editions. First of all, it's not your everyday Pelikan M800 with a different colour or material.... Instead, for this pen, Pelikan went all out and created what is essentially a one of a kind model, with some interesting features that set it well apart from other Pelikan pens.

The pen with the cap on has a distincly different profile from traditional Pelikans. The cap is almost the full length of the barrel. With it on, the entire barrel is covered, except for a short extension at the barrel end. The uncovered portion of the barrel is hexagon in profile, with a clear dome at the barrel end which encloses a small model of a pyramid.

The cap itself is gold, with heiroglyphs engraved down the full length. The cap top retains some of the traditional Pelikan styling cues, however, the clip is a simple curved design, not the expected Pelikan beak profile. The clip design does blend well with the overall look of the pen, however. While extreme, this is a well thought out pen in terms of the overall look. The size, shape, and proportions balance well visually.

Removing the cap reveals the barrel, about M800 in terms of size, and shaped as a straight sided cylinder. The pyramids of Giza are rendered in gold against a lacquer finish. This pen is, like most Pelikans, a piston filler, and wouldn't be complete without an ink view window. The section is gold, which adds enough visual weight to offset the rather heavy looking barrel end. Obviously, the cap is not designed to post!

The bottom portion of the barrel unscrews to reveal the piston turning knob. I would imagine that the ink capacity would be the same as the M800 sized pens, for those of you who wish to ink yours up.

If you were to choose this pen as an actual writing instrument, you would be served by the standard Pelikan 18K gold nib, albeit with a different look. The nib is engraved with a repetition of the pyramids design, and a pattern of fine lines running around the edges of the nib itself. It is a very plain design, that manages to give the nib a clean, elegant look.

The captop is complete with the Pelikan logo, rendered in a deep relief that gives it a three dimensional effect. The logo itself is cupped down inside the captop, so that you have to be looking straight down at the top to see it.

The limited production, and somewhat "out there" design will make it both difficult to get, as well as probably not to everyone's taste. What it does manage to do quite handily, however, is showcase Pelikan's commitment to design and workmanship. As Limited Editions go, this is a very impressive offering from Pelikan!
